This is a maze puzzle box. It has a maze engraved on the top and a marble inside and you just have to solve the maze, however there’s more to the maze than meets the eye. Once you open this box you can discover how the mechanism works. One might assume there isn’t room for a bonus secret, but is that really true?

Most people who solved this box did it in about 30 minutes. There were also a few people who weren’t able to figure out how the maze worked. It isn’t just a normal flat maze which makes opening the box harder. Once you figure out how the maze works, the configuration suddenly helps with opening the box.

Upon opening the box you will be able to see how the maze and the mechanism work. Resetting the box to a position of your choice is also very easy if the box is opened.

For the people who really love a puzzle challenge there is even a little bonus. If you don’t tell someone there is a bonus secret they probably will never find it because it is hard to spot… Even my friend Patrick (who has tried a lot of my puzzles) concluded that there wasn’t enough space for an extra secret. Can you prove him wrong?

I made a youtube video for this puzzle box. You can watch it here:

The laser cut file for cutting the wood for this puzzle box has a square around it. This will allow you to easily scale the laser cut file for any wood thickness. I used 4 mm wood and acrylic for making the puzzle box, and it resulted in a box which was 58x132x208 mm.
This box also uses a transparent part which I cut out of acrylic. You can also use wood instead of acrylic but then you won’t be able to see the maze if the box is open.
The square around the laser cut files is 450 by 275 mm for 4 mm wood. If you want to use another wood thickness, scale the laser cut file accordingly.

Besides the laser cut wood you will need:

  • Glue
  • Sanding paper
  • a marble with a diameter of 10 mm
  • 20 circle magnets with a diameter of 5 mm and a thickness of 3 mm (a thickness of 4 mm should work as well
  • 1 Metal pin with a diameter of 4mm and a length of about 80 mm. I used a nail to make this pin.
