This is the Mayan puzzle box. I originally made this box a few years ago and I only made +/-8. This box takes 42 steps to open and uses multiple mechanisms. Some people describe this box as a sequential discovery puzzle although this is debatable.

The biggest difference between this box and the one I made a few years ago is the size. Originally it was made out of 5 mm Poplar wood. This box is made out of 4 mm Birch wood. Originally the box was slightly bigger than it needed to be, and changing the wood thickness made the box 20% smaller. Birch wood is also a bit stronger than Poplar.

When I started making the box I had very little experience with laser cutting and woodworking. Because of this I wasn’t able to give the box a finishing layer of varnish because it would jam up the mechanism. Fortunately I now have a lot more experience with making puzzle boxes and I was able to Varnish the box without any problems!

The outside of the box is 196 x 152 x 76 mm. The box has one big main compartment and a smaller extra compartment. The main compartment is 140 x 96 x 32 mm (with a small area which is a bit deeper) and the extra compartment is 72 x 32 x 12 mm.

Below is what I originally wrote about this puzzle box. A little warning, it does contain some small spoilers.

This is a handmade Tombraider inspired Mayan puzzle box. The box has Buttons, sliders, rotating parts, internal sliders, switches and a hidden maze. Because all of these mechanisms are combined inside this box, it’s really hard to open. The box has 42 steps and I give this box an 8 out of 10.

I originally designed this box as a promotional stunt for the game Tombraider. Unfortunately it was canceled, but I liked the Mayan style so I still made the box. However, I did make it a lot more complicated. I changed the original 16 steps to 42 steps. I also added as many mechanisms as possible, like a maze and Buttons for instance.
