This is the building plan for the Mayan puzzle box. The box has Buttons, sliders, rotating parts, internal sliders, switches and a hidden maze. Because all of these mechanisms are combined inside this box, it’s really hard to open. The box takes 42 steps to open.

This is the building plan for the Mayan puzzle box. The box has Buttons, sliders, rotating parts, internal sliders, switches and a hidden maze. Because all of these mechanisms are combined inside this box, it’s really hard to open. The box takes 42 steps to open.

I originally designed this box as a promotional stunt for the game Tombraider. Unfortunately it was cancelled, but I liked the Mayan style so I still made the box. However, I did make it a lot more complicated. I changed the original 16 steps to 42 steps. I also added as many mechanisms as possible, like a maze and Buttons for instance.

I didn’t plan to make a building plan for this puzzle box because it’s harder to make than most puzzle boxes. Now that I have some more experience with making building plans and laser cut files I felt more confident in making this building plan. However, be warned! If you haven’t made any puzzle boxes before I recommend Making an easier one before you try this box. 

The laser cut file for cutting the wood for this puzzle box has a square around it. This will allow you to easily scale the laser cut file for any wood thickness. I used 4 mm wood for making the puzzle box, and it resulted in a box which was 68x152x196 mm. 
The square around the laser cut file is 450 by 275 mm for 4 mm wood. If you want to use another wood thickness, scale the laser cut file accordingly.  

Besides the laser cut wood you will need:

  • Glue
  • Sanding paper
  • A marble with a diameter of 10 mm
  • A rubber band

The laser cut files have three layers:
A layer for the outer square to scale the file (450 x 275 mm)
A layer for cutting.
A layer for line engraving.
